about

"Zugzwang (from German 'compulsion to move'; pronounced [ˈtsuːktsvaŋ]) is a situation found in chess and other turn-based games wherein one player is put at a disadvantage because of their obligation to make a move; a player is said to be "in zugzwang" when any legal move will worsen their position.[1]

Although the term is used less precisely in games such as chess, it is used specifically in combinatorial game theory to denote a move that directly changes the outcome of the game from a win to a loss.[2][3] Putting the opponent in zugzwang is a common way to help the superior side win a game, and in some cases it is necessary in order to make the win possible.[4] More generally, the term can also be used to describe a situation where none of the available options lead to a good outcome"

Inspired by an event that happened the first week of June 2023. I was walking home from a friends house. A young buck was walking twenty feet ahead of me down the center of the road as I walked along the sidewalk. The deer crossed over to the sidewalk and tried to jump the iron fence into the woods but landed on top of it.
I ran straight for it thinking its legs were caught between the vertical pieces of metal. I talked to the deer trying to calm it down as it tried to free itself. It seemed to work and the deer calmed down planted each front leg against the fence and began to pull itself off the vertical piece of iron going straight through its chest. It stood on its hind legs towering over me before falling hard to the ground and bleeding out on the ground in front of me.
The experience resulted in some long meditations on the fragility of life and real hopelessness. This album is an attempt to process this event and the emotions tied to the experience.
